HARRISBURG, Pa. -- March 30, 2009 -- The High-Speed Ruggedized (HSR) backplane connector from Tyco Electronics combines proven commercial technology in a ruggedized format for military and aerospace applications. HSR connectors are easily configured and assembled by the user. Modules available now or in development include:

  • 30 differential pairs, with performance up to 10 Gb/s
  • 60 single-ended contacts (open pin field)
  • 8 power contacts, rated at 15 A per contact
  • 8 RF coax (in development)
  • Single-mode and multimode optic modules (in development)

While leveraging existing technologies--such as the Universal Power Module (UPM) for power, HM-Zd for high-speed differential signals, and SMPM coaxial contacts for RF up to 40 GHz--HSR connectors are optimized for the more rugged aerospace/defense application environments.

The HSR is length scalable. As an example, a four-module configuration enables flexible configurations of up to 120 differential pairs, 240 open field signal contacts, 32 SMPM coaxial contacts, or 32 power contacts per connector.

HSR connectors meet the requirements for use in line-replaceable modules (LRMs) and line-replaceable units (LRUs). Applications include radar interfaces for RF and digital processing, vehicle mission computers and navigation, communications hubs and processing, weapons control and targeting, power supply and distribution, mobile and fixed satellite terminals and ground base stations, avionics and vetronics, sensor array hubs and data processing, and electronic warfare and countermeasure management.

The connector system includes a vertical motherboard connector and right-angle daughterboard connector, both using solderless press-fit contacts for board mounting. Nickel-plated aluminum shells, including guiding hardware as well as provision for keying, provide a robust mechanical and EMI/ESD protection. A conductive surface on signal modules supplies industry-leading ESD protection in support of 2 Level maintenance initiatives. The system is designed to meet VITA 47 environmental levels.
