DENSITY DOUBLED CONTACT SPACING OF VOLTAGE REGULATOR MODULES (VRM) CONNECTORS

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 2, 2006 - Tyco Electronics announces a new connector in its ELCON Mini CROWN EDGE line of low-profile, high-current power connectors for pluggable 1U and 2U Voltage Regulator Modules (VRM) applications.

The Mini CROWN EDGE connector, which is available in a variety of form factors, has recently been enhanced to offer greater choice in signal contact spacing and connector length. The standard Mini CROWN EDGE product features signal contacts on a .100 inch centerline. The new tighter-fit configuration offers a higher density of signal contacts on a .050 inch centerline. This signal spacing allows for the same powerful connector in a reduced size.

"The change in signal contact spacing significantly reduces the connector footprint necessary for many VRM's," comments David Beck, global product manager for Tyco Electronics' Mini CROWN EDGE connectors. "Tyco Electronics' CROWN BAND power contacts already provide superior power density, while the higher density signal contacts increase the capability of the Mini CROWN EDGE product."

By using high-performance CROWN BAND power contacts to deliver a high power density form factor, Mini CROWN EDGE connectors are ideal for VRM 10.2 applications and beyond with requirements up to 150Amps. Individual power contacts are rated at 25Amps each (30 °C temperature rise in still air). The low profile power contacts have a short path length that renders lower loop inductance levels, thus meeting the high slew rate requirements of recent VRM-to-MPU power delivery architectures. In contrast with VRM connectors which use U-shaped low current contacts, the Mini CROWN EDGE connector is a true power connector that incorporates Tyco Electronics' power contact technology. By taking advantage of the CROWN BAND contact, the product can achieve current levels of up to 150Amps, while using less than 4 inches of the valuable circuit board real estate to provide superior reliability of connection.

Options in Mini CROWN EDGE connector board termination are dependent upon the configuration of the connector chosen. The new connector is available in Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and two lengths of through-hole PC tail connection. The traditional connector offers three options of board mounting including SMT, Compliant Press Fit, and two lengths of through-hole PC tail connection. The SMT version of both connectors offers a board hold-down feature to facilitate the soldering process. Two latches hold the VRM to the connector and are robust enough to accommodate not just 1U, but also 2U VRMs, as verified by rigorous shock and vibration testing.
