BENSHEIM, Germany -- August 11, 2009 -- New emission legislation and the trend towards energy efficient transportation support increased development of hybrid propulsion for passenger cars. One of the key applications for improved fuel economy in the hybrid market is the recovery and storage of energy during the braking phase or regenerative braking. When braking, the energy of the moving car is converted and stored in the Li-ion batteries instead of being dissipated through the heating of brake disks. The available electrical energy is then used to help the car accelerate by releasing this energy into a controlled electrical motor. More advanced systems may continuously propel the car's electrical motors. In order to maximize the efficiency of the electrical hybrid motors, the position of the drive shaft must be continuously monitored.
Tyco Electronics has developed a break-through inductive sensor, known as a Reluctance Resolver, that can help support reduced fuel consumption within these new hybrid propulsion systems.
The Reluctance Resolver is part of a system that measures shaft angles. It consists of a stator (non-moving) part with radially placed coils, and a rotor (rotating center part) which is made of a laminated core. The non-moving stator coils senses the magnitude of the magnetic field between the stator and rotor. This field strength is dependent on the shaft position and varies directly with the rotor position. These changes in magnetic fields induce voltage changes detected by the sensing coils located on the stator. As a result, it is possible, with standardized electronics, to accurately measure (e.g. a 14-bit) position angles of the drive shaft. The Reluctance Resolver output enables the control system to optimize the efficiency, torque and power of the electrical motor.
Tyco Electronics added a new dimension to this resolver by developing an innovative winding scheme and component layout which provides a more cost efficient production process, without reducing the high accuracy of the resolver. The resolver is available as a fully functional sealed package including cable and connector. The complete assembly is fully tested and mechanically designed to simplify installation into the electrical motor. Tyco Electronics' product knowledge in magnetic fields and winding technology is the foundation for innovative solutions in this application area.
