BENSHEIM, Germany -- Oct. 2, 2009 -- The Tyco Electronics HCR 200 relay is the first automotive relay in its class for start/stop applications.

During the cranking phase of restart, the voltage of the main battery can drop to critical levels and cause disturbances in the vehicle's power system. In upcoming compact-to-luxury class cars with start/stop function, the starter system will be separated from the vehicle's power system during cranking and temporarily supported by a second battery.

The HCR 200 relay is designed as a monostable normally-closed relay, which provides electrical continuity in case of failures in the control circuit. The current carrying capability is up to 130 A continuous at 110°C ambient temperature, enabling its integration into pre-fuse boxes and power distribution boxes in the engine compartment. Compared to conventional solutions, the relay additionally offers the advantage of galvanic isolation.
