AMP has introduced a high speed interconnect solution, the High Speed Serial Data Connector (HSSDC) , for transmitting data at rates exceeding 2.125 Gbit/sec. This new connector system was specially designed for use in copper implementation of Fibre Channel and other serial data applications which require extremely high data transfer rates over long distances. Approved by the ANSI X3T11 committee for Fibre Channel in December 1995, and by the ANSI X3T10.1 for Serial Storage Architecture in September 1996, the interconnection system is also included in the new IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet standard.
For highest performance, the connectors and cable were designed with the aid of advanced modeling capabilities developed within AMP. Electromagnetic modeling tools and an internallydeveloped circuit simulation technique, which accounts for the frequency dependent natureof cable, are used to optimize the equalization circuitry for long distance applications.
The fully shielded connector has proven CHAMP .050 Series II contact interface with high durability gold plated contacts on 1.25mm centerlines. Make first/break last ground contacts, positive "click" latching and a polarized/keyed interface provide correct, reliable connections. Pc board connectors with 6 or 8 contacts in right-angle, surface mount or straddle mount configurations are available. These connectors offer a low, 10mm profile to meet the Peripheral Component Interface specifications and allow up to four connectors to fit in a single card slot. New panel mount connectors offer enhanced emissions performance for multi-port applications.
The cable plugs, which terminate to #22 AWG through #30 AWG, 150 ohm, low skew, shielded quad cable, incorporate a small printed circuit board which can include equalization circuitry to extend the usable length of copper cable to over 30 meters. Loopback assemblies are available for Fibre Channel - arbitrated loop applications. In addition to the HSSDC product line, AMP provides 3 position, .100" centerline, point-to-point cable assemblies using discrete, 150 ohm, shielded differential pair cable for internal wiring on Fibre Channel systems. Adapter cable assemblies consisting of the HSSDC on one end and Subminiature DB-9 connector on the other, as well as double-ended DB-9 cable assemblies are available. Other adapter-style cable assemblies include HSSDC to two 1 x 3 connectors, DB-9 Plug or Receptacle to two 1 x 3 connectors, and an HSSDC to DB-9 receptacle with a power pair added for connecting to a Media Interface Adapter.
