TelecommunicationsAntenna design for mobile phones and other mobile wireless devices is increasingly challenging given the demand for smaller components, reduction in overall available space, and strict performance requirements. Making use of an MID design provides the advantage of being able to use the maximum volume of available space to achieve the desired performance. Essentially, more antenna solutions are made possible for various specifications when taking the MID approach. Additionally, space savings realized through the implementation of MID parts allows for a reduction in the overall size of a product. Regarding electrical performance, MID technology allows for more intricate and complex circuit patterns to be developed which provides more options for achieving the required performance specifications. MID antennas also demonstrate greater dimensional accuracy and repeatability than most other competing technologies. Another area where MID technology is prevalent in the telecommunications industry is in EMI/RFI shielding applications. A common requirement exists for materials that have the ability to dissipate static charges, stemming from the fact that sensitive electronics found in high-tech packages need to be protected. In other words, EMI/RFI shielding has become a necessity to manufacturers of portable electronic devices. With the use of plastics commonly found in MID designs, these requirements can be achieved, weight can be reduced and in many cases they can be integrated into a multi-functional MID.
